Why use just one search engine, when you can put more than half a dozen at your fingertips? The Groowe Search Toolbar is one of an ever-growing category of Internet Explorer toolbar add-ons that provide access to a variety of search tools, in this case including Google, Yahoo, AskJeeves, MSN, Amazon, and Download.com. The interface is a bit cluttered, but we found it fairly convenient in practice. The list of favorite sites can be customized, and the toolbar adapts itself to the search engines you choose. For instance, it displays buttons for different download categories when working with Download.com. The pop-up-blocking function is fairly rudimentary, unfortunately. The software does not have the ability to block floating ads, and doesn't support "whitelists" that allow pop-up windows from trusted sites. Nevertheless, if you often work with a variety of search engines, Groowe might provide a welcome set of shortcuts.

It can also create a log file on your computer for each backup it does, with full details of what was saved to that backup. Backups can be fully automated and scheduled, so they're easy enough to do every day if you want. It can even synchronize the contents of selected folders between two computers, finding and copying changes made on one computer to the other. You choose what to back up by creating a Backup Plan, and using a simple Windows Explorer-like interface to select the folders and files you want to save. If you aren't sure what needs to be backed up on your computer, use our Wizard to create a Backup Plan for you by searching your entire computer for folders with the kinds of files you want to save. You don't have to remember where you put things. Backup Plans also adapt automatically when you create, delete, move or rename folders and files, so you don't have to remember to fix them after reorganizing your hard drive. Will make backups to DVD's, CD's, USB flash drives, and other USB connected storage devices.

This download manager doesn't offer many extra features, but we liked its clean design and straightforward interface. NetLeech is integrated into Internet Explorer (but not Mozilla Firefox and Opera), so to download a file, all you need to do is click on the appropriate link in your browser. This freeware is well organized, filing downloads into folders automatically based on file type. Another handy feature we discovered during testing is the ability to switch file folders during download (in case you notice there's not enough disk space, for example). While the program isn't able to schedule downloads, considering its other useful features, we weren't too concerned. Overall, if you're looking for a reliable download manager, this freeware option is a good pick.

This top-notch feed reader will devour your RSS and Atom feeds, though a few users might find it too basic. Snarfer keenly follows the "keep it simple" adage in every function. An uncomplicated, uncluttered interface follows a generic app design of left-side listed entries with a right-side preview pane. Copy a feed link in your browser and switch to Snarfer, and you'll find the program has already entered the link from the clipboard into your add-feed dialog.

To save an entry, simply drag it to a Save folder. E-mailing an entry and other basic functions are available in the context menu, while helpful wizards make it a snap to add and save Craigslist or eBay searches. Especially helpful is the prominent Quick Search box, though searches can't be limited to a single feed. Feed updates and update intervals are easily set, and users can elect to automatically save entries they have read or have them expire after a certain number saved. You can also import feeds from other readers using OPML.

This is a perfect first feed-reader for newbies, although experienced readers will miss customizations like changing fonts and preview pane location. Nevertheless, we recommend this freeware feed reader for its simplicity, small footprint, presentation, and efficiency.

Keyloggers are programs that hide in the background and record a user's every keystroke, mouse click, and screen image, letting others (such as the boss) see exactly what that user has been doing while at the computer. Long used in high-security applications, keyloggers can help parents, employers, and others who are responsible for others' behavior (and, more to the point, misbehavior) by clearly showing which Web sites and programs a specific user accessed at a specific time. Spyrix Free Keylogger can put that power in your hands. This easy-to-use freeware logs keystrokes and online activity, takes screenshots, and monitors other activities for specific users without their knowledge.

Spyrix has an attractive user interface that won't look out of place in a corporate environment or a home PC. The program opened with its Settings dialog, where we could set options such as running when Windows starts, removing shortcut menus, and other security-related options. We also set a hot-key combo and password to show Spyrix. Under ScreenShot, we could set Spyrix to record an image any time a window changes or something is copied to the clipboard. Spyrix displays all activity in a list view in the upper half of the main window, with specific items such as documents and images displayed in the preview pane below. The program is very easy to use, once you've set things up to your liking, but we recommend being careful when hiding Spyrix since you'll need to remember your hot-key combo and password to access the program in hidden mode. It's not meant to be easy, since a security tool that any smart kid can disable isn't worth the name, is it?

We recommend Spyrix Free Keylogger for parents, business owners, or anyone who provides PC and Internet access, with the potential liability that comes along with it. But we also recommend using it with caution and with an eye to privacy concerns, too, as we do with any software that monitors user activity. Used properly, Spyrix Free Keylogger can be an invaluable tool for monitoring and enforcing PC access policies at home and at work
